Coachella Round-up! Day 3!

Day 3 of Coachella - also known as medieval torture by heatstroke! When we parked at noon, it was already 101 degrees, and only got hotter until sundown! I sent a few "I think I'm dying" text messages throughout the afternoon. Aside from such, it was a great day of music!

We began in the EDM tent again to see Green Velvet, an artist I actually knew!

I was excited to see him sing "Shake and Pop" and get a little early afternoon dancing in. Next we headed over to see the band I'd been most looking forward to besides Bright Eyes since the lineup was announced! We headed to over to see fun.

fun. put on an absolutely amazing show! I've been a huge Format and Steel Train fan since I was in my early high school years, so getting to see Nate and Jack play together was awesome! Nate has such fantastic stage presence and command of the audience - he's almost mesmerizing to watch perform! I definitely loved hearing them play "All The Pretty Girls," and danced along to their entire set! When Nate shouted "It wouldn't be a festival without the ghost of Freddie Mercury!" I knew I was in for something good - their cover of "Radio Gaga" was radical, and I've had the song stuck in my head ever since! I'm a sucker for a good cover, and this was definitely one of them!

I'm also a huge Something Corporate/Andrew McMahon fan, and was kind of bummed that the Jack's Mannequin set time was in direct conflict with fun.'s. Still, after fun.'s set ended, I did get to hear them play "Made For Each Other," which put me in a great mood!

After a major cool-down session, we went to watch Jimmy Eat World. I'm a huge Jimmy Eat World fan! (Noticing a "huge fan" trend here?) I saw them at the Pop Disaster tour with Green Day and Blink-182 about 10 years ago, and have been dying to see them again since. I had tickets to a show about 6 months ago and didn't end up being able to go, (Well, truth is, no one would go with me...) so I was so stoked that they were at Coachella. They were fantastic, as always.

I really wanted to see their entire set, but Melissa wanted to see Ellie Goulding, so we headed over to her set about halfway through. I was pleasantly surprised and definitely enjoyed her music.

I had never heard of Best Coast, either. I actually confused them with Beach House, but when I saw them I realized I was mixing them up. Hah. They were really great, and as the sun started to set, it made everything in life more enjoyable.

Next, Melissa really wanted to see Duck Sauce, another DJ/EDM act. Turns out, so did everyone else at the festival. It was super crazy and crowded in that tent, so we left in the middle to try to get a "good spot" for Chromeo. Chromeo was super awesome, though. They put on a fun dance party, with a whole mess of people grooving along. My favorite part was when Ezra from Vampire Weekend came out to sing and play sax with the band.

Unfortunately, because Chromeo started about 20 minutes late, we missed most of The Strokes set. Still, I got to see them play a few songs, and they were super fantastic! Watching them play "Last Night" was almost unreal! They were so fun to dance and twist to!

I was also kind of bummed that Coachella put Neon Trees on a smaller stage and an odd time slot, because I didn't get to see them, and I'm really fond of them. Luckily, I'm pretty sure I'll have more chances to see them in the future! I hope so, at least!

We finished off Coachella with two hours of Kanye West! Holy guacamole! His set was bananas!

Kanye came out on this elevated platform, floating over the crowd, when he opened with "Dark Fantasy." While singing, "Can we get much higher?", he did! He also had his full entourage of ballerinas dancing onstage throughout his set - it was awesome! He sang a ton of his material, from all of his albums, mostly focusing on "My Beautiful, Dark, Twisted Fantasy." He even did a medley of all of his collaborations and I loved it! He gave the audience a huge speech about how thankful he was to be included in Coachella, how grateful he was that his fans stuck with him after everyone told us not to, and that this was his most important, memorable, and proud show since his mom passed. Then, he went into "Hey Mama." I was teary-eyed! His act was nothing short of spectacular, complete with background graphics and fireworks. What a perfect way to end the weekend!

Happy Coachella!

  3. Prepare for long comment... First of all you look really cute and the heat sounds like it was horrible! I'm really jealous that you got to see Bright Eyes! I have seen fun. and they are awesome. I don't have any of their cds though. I have also seen Jack's Mannequin. Although when I saw them I had never heard of them before so I prpbably didn't appreciate it as much as I would now. I saw Jimmy Eat World back in August and they were amazing. I am jealous that you have seen Blink 182! I heart Best Coast. You should definitely get their latest cd. I'm also jealous you got to see Kanye West. I am super excited for Bonnaroo in June! Sorry for the really long comment. I really love music.
